Bullgap Bullmastiffs

History Page

The history of the Bullmastiff begins in England around 1860 when he was used on large estates and game reserves to combat the ever increasing poaching problems. The penalty, back then, for poaching was death and poachers would do anything to escape capture, including killing the gamekeeper. Thus the bullmastiff was created. Over time these estates were divided up and as the need for the Bullmastiff as a gamekeepers watchdog dwindled, they were then bred for home and family companions.

The Bullmastiff was produced by crossing the Old English Bulldog with the Mastiff. Some believe the Bullmastiffs keen sense of smell comes from a bloodhound infusion. The Mastiff was noted for its size, weight and power and the Old English Bulldog for its agility, strength and courage. The result of this was a dog that could remain silent at the approach of poachers, a fearless dog that would attack on command and a dog that could knock down and hold a poacher without mauling him.

The breed was recongnised by the English Kennel Club in 1924.

The Bullmastiffs sheer physical size, black-masked face and impressive regal composure can appear very intimidating. He is capable of astounding speed off the mark and is very strong. He has the necessary strength to pin his victim to the floor or wall without biting or harming it. He is even tempered, level headed and noble.

Bullmastiffs are an extremely loving giving breed. They become totally loyal to those that love and care for them and make excellent family dogs. Although they appear docile, when alerted to danger the Bullmastiff is an incredible guard dog and will view his family as someone to love and protect.

With a well-rounded and robust personality he is fearless, obedient, loyal and affectionate. They need to become "one of the family" not just the family dog. Treat them with love and kindness and your reward will be overwhelming.

The Bullmastiff is is in his element around children, never losing temper and very tolerant. However, because of it's sheer size and power it is recommended that they be supervised at all times when around children.
